Slayer – On the way to the SCAA.

I’m posting this picture of Dan Urwiler posing behind the proto-Slayer: Slayer’s prototype. The fit and finish of this pre-production machine is far less refined than the production version. The proto-Slayer was almost 100% handmade, and went through numerous iterations before reaching the version shown here. Like most prototypes, proto-Slayer reflects many tweaks and changes made along the way.
Handcrafting a Slayer test machine
Proto-Slayer was fabricated and assembled in studio C105, through a process more closely akin to sculpting than engineering in some ways. Rough as it is, however, this first machine allowed us to see and envision every detail of the ultimate Slayer to a greater degree than our drawings alone.
Proto-Slayer is a fully functional machine, wired as it was by Dan to brew, steam, and clock pressure changes just like the earlier Frankenbot machine.
When does a machine transcend to fine jewelry?
“It’s sad in a funny way, how I already miss the development process,” Dan confesses. “It’s a lot of fun.”
The Slayers presented at the SCAA in Atlanta will meet the fit & finish standards that we hope will elevate Slayer, from a mere espresso machine, to fine jewelry for brewing espresso. Sort of like a Faberge egg for coffee. Maybe.
